This was originally divided into 'Fun', 'Achieve', 'Engage' and 'Faith', however 'Engage' and 'Achieve' were superseded by 'Support' in 2024. You can find more information on these funding categories below, with reference to some of the key groups and activities which come under each stream. In order to have a more detailed view of the various groups and activities which we run, head to the sections for Kids and Families or Young People respectively. WCYP's 'Engage' project focused on... WCYP'S 'Achieve' project focused on... FUN This division of WCYP aims to support children and young people through open access youth groups, trips, and residentials. These groups and activities are focused on providing new experiences, improved self-esteem and confidence, positive role models, and raised aspirations. As the most attended category of work within WCYP, the ‘Fun’ activities are often the method for WCYP to reach more children, young people and families so that further support can subsequently be provided through the ‘Support’ category (such as a referral to a mental health support group, for example). SUPPORT This division of WCYP aims to support children and young people through a variety of groups and activities focusing on mental health and emotional development, including schools work. The key outcomes for the 'Support' category of work include increased confidence and emotional resilience, increased self-esteem, improved mental health, better relationships (with peers and families), and improved educational engagement and attainment. This includes Resilient Kids, schools' work such as mentoring and 'drawing and talking', the Young Leader programme, and family work. FAITH This division of WCYP aims to support children and young to explore the Christian faith in a fun and engaging way. These groups and activities are focused on sharing the Christian message (evangelism ) , providing Christian teaching, and other outcomes such as improved confidence and relationships, and having fun. The majority of WCYP's 'Faith' work is run in parternship with Holy Trinity , the local Anglican Parish church which originally started WCYP. WCYP has also worked in partnership with HTW and KCC to launch 'Hope City' as a means of reaching Weston's 19-29's demographic with the Christian message. - Our Story | About Us | Weston Church Youth Project
About Us This is the place to be to find out more about WCYP! Find out about: Our Purpose, Our Home, Our Team, Our Finances , and Our Story. Our story 1992 THE BEGINNING A long time ago, a Vicar called NAME and the team at Holy Trinity Weston decided to begin Weston Church Youth Project.... 1999 GAINING MOMENTUM By 1999, WCYP had 4 team members, including a Project Manager, two youth workers and a Project Trainee, and recieved regular funding from over 8 organisations. 2001 ROCK SOLID By the year 2001, our WCYP records talk about an 'Open Youth Club' called Rock Solid! In June 2017, Weston Church Youth Project officially became a charitable incorporated organisation (C.I.O.) and was granted charitable status. 2019? THE REBRAND Text.... Weston Church Youth Project.... 2020 THE PANDEMIC As you know, March 2020 was the beginning of the first UK lockdown as a result of 'rona (the Coronavirus). Just like the rest of the UK, WCYP had to adjust to lockdown life, from social distancing and mask-wearing through to home fitness and video calls. Sadly, the pandemic was not a positive experience for a lot of people, including children and young people, having a significantly negative impact on social, emotional, physical, and mental health, as well as behaviour and education. This impact was disproportionately higher amongst those in poverty, such as in our local community. We witnessed this negative impact in Weston, and did what we could to continue supporting our community during this time. 2022 WCYP'S 30TH BIRTHDAY How has the time gone that quickly? In August 2022, we were joined by supporters of WCYP and various members of the community at the Venny for a fun community day celebrating WCYP's 30th birthday! 2022 REBRANDED WEBSITE As part of our 2022 rebrand, two members of staff at the time - Anna, our Fundraising and Marketing Assistant, and Rachel, our Project Manager - helped to produce a new, accessible website with Access by Design. 2023 LOVE WESTON As time goes on, more and more churches, charities and organisations are wanting to make a difference in our community. It's not an official term, but we introduced the name 'Love Weston' for community partnership events in the area. Check out our 2023 Halloween Light Trail or our 2024 Easter Trail. 2024 LAUNCH OF HOPE CITY In 2024, a new church began in Weston - Hope City Church, Southampton - which was launched as a partnership between WCYP, Holy Trinity Weston, and Kings Community Church. They are based at the Hope Centre and meet at Weston Shore Infants School . While a multi-generational community, this church is particularly focused on supporting people aged 19-29, as a continuation of our work supporting 7-18-year-olds at WCYP. 2025... THE FUTURE What's next for WCYP? We continue to dream big dreams and have faith for the continued work of WCYP and what we could get up to in the future. In order for us to keep serving our community and helping "the young people of Weston to live life to the full", we'd love you to get involved, whether that's by helping, giving, or praying.
- Young People | WCYP

The first hour is for hanging out with friends, with a variety of activities on offer; PS5, Nintendo Switch, table tennis, pool, boardgames, crafts, sweets to buy and sofas to just sit and chat. The second part is our food and faith time, an optional time to eat a meal together and discuss what it means to be a Christian. You don’t have to be a Christian to take part, all viewpoints are valuable. We then play a group game together. The Venue Thursdays 8-9:30pm at The Hope Centre The Venue is our free youth café for young people aged 15-18 (Year 11+). It’s a warm, relaxed atmosphere for you to come along and chill out with mates, get to know others, play games, use our PS5 or Nintendo Switch, play pool or table tennis, catch up with our team, or even access education or employability support if you’re feeling keen. There’s usually free pizza and hot drinks on offer. We would love to see you there! Follow @thevenue_wcyp on Insta Young Leaders Various Young Leaders support us in running our groups and events for 7-11 year olds. From playing with children who need a friend, helping with set up and pack down to leading an activity such as a football tournament, it’s a great way for young people to give back to their community. Young leaders will learn new skills to help grow as a person as well as being good for their CV. It’s voluntary so there's no pressure to help every week and it’s a fun community to be a part of. Speak to Matt, Ellie or Carolyn, or come along to Connect or The Venue if you’d like to be a young leader! SECONDARY SCHOOL's work Various Once a week, some of our team go into the local secondary school to meet with young people during their lunch break. From playing Uno to talking about life, we aim to be a supportive adult that young people can talk to. If you see one of our team during lunchtime do come and say hello! Our team also support the local secondary school through mentoring, assemblies, and group work. Trips Various We run a variety of amazing trips throughout the year for young people, taking a group for fun trips to places like Ninja Warrior, Laserquest, and the New Forest Aqua Park. Trips provide young people with new and exciting opportunities for activities, to develop friendships, and to learn new skills. Come along to our groups and follow our social media pages to look out for our next trip! DETACHED YOUTH WORK Various Detached work is where some of our team go out into the estate, meeting young people in parks and around the neighbourhood to get to know them, finding ways to support them and let them know about our work and other services that might benefit them. We do this in the warmer months when more people are out and we enjoy having a mobile presence in our community. If you see us about, come and say hello! Residentials Various We run a variety of amazing residentials for young people to exciting places like YMCA Fairthorne Manor. Residentials provide young people with new and exciting opportunities for activities, as well as to develop friendships, learn new skills, and develop their independence. Come along to our groups and follow our social media pages to look out for our next residential! Dynamic Camp August Bank Holiday Weekend Romsey, Southampton For nearly 10 years, WCYP have partnered with Holy Trinity Weston to take a group of young people to Dynamic Camp. Dynamic Camp is an action packed Christian residential camp for 11-14 year olds (Year 6 to Year 9). The camp involves sport, craft, worship, Bible teaching, small groups, evening entertainment, food, the chance to make lots of friends and a trip to the new forest aqua park.

OUR DEFINITIONS Sometimes the language we use can be confusing, whether that's learning what various accronyms mean, or using the right 'politically correct' language; we wanted to help by explaining a few of the words and phrases that you might hear us use or find on our website. Abuse Abuse is when someone is treated harshly and unfairly. There are four main types of abuse: physical (e.g., violence), emotional (e.g., hurtful speech), neglect (e.g., lack of food) and sexual (e.g., exposure to pornography). There are other types including organisational (e.g., a company), domestic (e.g., someone within the home) or spiritual (e.g., manipulating people’s religion). Please email safeguarding@wcyp.org if you have any concerns. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) ACEs is an acronym which stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences. This is a term used for difficult experiences which people may have experienced when they were younger that have a lasting impact on mental health, physical health, and general wellbeing, from serious cases of trauma and abuse through to a bereavement, or transitions like moving house or changing schools. Please email safeguarding@wcyp.org if you have any concerns. Coherent Being 'coherent' is one of our values. Coherence is when something is consistent and works with other parts to make a whole. When we say we are a 'coherent' organisation, we mean that the different parts of WCYP (such as FUN, SUPPORT and FAITH) are all valuable and important, and they work together to form WCYP. It also means that we take a 'holistic approach' to supporting children, young people and families. Christian Christianity is a faith/ religion which is all about believing in the life, death, and resurrection (coming back to life) of Jesus Christ and having faith (trusting) in him. If you’re interested, why not join our friends at Holy Trinity or Hope City, who would be happy to talk to you about it. You can also find out more on the Evangelical Alliance’s website. Dignity Treating people with dignity means treating them with respect and value, no matter who they are, what their background, or what they have done. We believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Disclosure A disclosure is when someone directly communicates a safeguarding concern to someone else. A child may make a disclosure to a member of our team, and this will be passed onto the Safeguarding Lead immediately. Please email safeguarding@wcyp.org if you have any concerns. Evangelism Evangelism is a word that Christians use for talking about what they believe with others, "sharing the good news", particularly with the intention for others to eventually believe too. Family Family is very important; families are the heart of communities like Weston. Family in Weston may not always look like it does in other places, but whatever shape or size your family might be, it is still important. Whether your family is linked by adoption, foster care, step-families, single parent households, families in-law, friends that are family, the people that live in your flat's corridor, or friends from your ethnic or religious community, we understand that it's important. We ask everyone to be respectful of people who may come from different family backgrounds to yours. Holistic Having a holistic approach acknowledges the different areas that develop to make a person who they are. Many would include the following aspects of life in a holistic approach: physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual. From a Chrisitan perspective, the Bible talks about a person being made up of 'body, mind, and spirit', and also acknowledges the importance of these other areas of life too. Mental Health Just like physical health, it is important to look after your mental health. Whether you have a mental health condition or not, it is important to look after your mental and emotional health too. Mental Health Condition Mental Health Conditions are diagnosed mental health challenges that people experience, such as depression, anxiety and OCD. Mental Health: Anxiety Anxiety is a mental health condition where people feel overwhelmingly concerned/ worried. This may impact their ability to engage in activities or socialise. Mental Health: Bereavement Experiencing a bereavement is when someone close to a person dies, and they grieve the loss. Mental Health: Depression Depression is a mental health condition affecting mood and behaviour, causing someone to feel extreme sadness or hopelessness. Mental Health: Diagnosis When a doctor or other professional has tested and confirmed that someone has a medical condition. Mental Health: Eating Disorders Eating disorders are mental health conditions which impact how a person views themselves, their body, and impacts their attitude and behaviour relating to food. Mental Health: Grief Grief is the task of processing a loss that has been experienced. This is often related to a bereavement, but can be a different kind of loss, such as losing a friendship or leaving your old school. Mental Health: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) OCD is a mental health condition causing excessive perfectionism, detail and order. Open Access Open Access is a term which can be used to mean a couple of different things. We use the term 'Open Access' for some of our FUN groups, where children and young people can arrive and leave whenever they like during the session, so long as they have parental consent to leave without an adult (via a registration form). We do everything we can to keep children safe while they are on-site during a session, and we make sure children do not leave unless we have checked they have permission to do so, however we cannot take responsibility for their actions or safety when they are off site and have left our supervision. If you do have any concerns, please do get in touch with us. Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PACE) PACE is an accronym from Psychologist Dan Hughes, which helps adults to think about how they respond to children and young people when they present with challenging behaviour. Each of the four terms is defined above. PACE: Playfulness As part of Dan Hughes' PACE accronym, 'Playfulness' is about having fun, communicating at an age-appropriate level, and providing support, rather than using authority or fear to discipline. PACE: Acceptance As part of Dan Hughes' PACE accronym, 'Acceptance' is about making sure the child feels listened to and that the adult hears things from the perspective of the child. If the adult or someone else has a different story of what happened, the adult can calmly explain this to the child after they have had a chance to speak, without making them feel rejected. PACE: Curiosity As part of Dan Hughes' PACE accronym, 'Curiosity' is about asking questions and exploring the situation from the child's perspective, helping them to think about other people’s views. PACE: Empathy As part of Dan Hughes' PACE accronym, 'Empathy' is about imagining what it's like to be the child and that shaping how the adult responds. The child doesn't want to be told off or made to feel that they're lying; they want to be heard, understood, and will hopefully be happy to learn and apologise. Safeguarding Safeguarding is about keeping everyone safe, especially from harm, abuse, and neglect. It's a very important part of how WCYP supports children, young people and families from our community. There are different types of issues which safeguarding keeps people safe from, and the main four types are: physical, emotional and sexual abuse, and neglect. Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, no matter who you are or how old you are. Please email safeguarding@wcyp.org if you have any concerns. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) SEND is an acronym which stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This is a term used for diagnosed conditions and disabilities, such as autism or visual impairment. SEND: Attachment Disorders This is a type of disorder that comes from early childhood experiences, usually from a lack of normal social interaction, attention, or care from parents or ‘care givers’, impacting behaviour and social skills. SEND: Attention Defecit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a Special Educational Need which impacts concentration and energy; it may cause lots of energy or none at all, making it hard to engage in activities or social interactions. SEND: Autism/ Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder with communication, social, and behavioural challenges. It is a spectrum, which means symptoms of autism vary for different people. People with autism may learn, act, think, communicate, and interact differently than people who do not have autism spectrum disorder. Symptoms of autism include repetitive behaviours, limited interests, and problems with interaction. SEND: Dyselxia Dyslexia makes it harder for someone to read (unrelated to intellect or eyesight). SEND: Neurodiverse People whose brain functions differently to most others, such as those with a diagnosed SEND condition. SEND: Neurotypical People with minimal brain differences, similar to most others. Shame Shame is an emotion which people can experience by action or thought; people may feel ‘ashamed’ for something which they have done or that other people think that they’ve done, or for something that they think about themselves, or something others think about them. For example, someone might feel shame for having an affair, or someone else might make them feel shame because they are from a certain background or social group. It is important to understand shame, because often shame is a key barrier for people getting the support they need. Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) SEMH is an acronym which stands for Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties. This is a term used for various difficulties that individuals might face, often making it hard for them to engage in social or educational settings. Sadly, sometimes the behaviours resulting from Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties mean that children are often misunderstood and labelled as “naughty” and “difficult children”, when there is often a reason for them behaving in that way. Theraputic We may use the term 'therapeutic' in relation to our response to challenging behaviour. Therapeutic support takes an extra step to understand where the individual is coming from and why they are behaving the way that they are, ideally helping the individual to understand their emotions better, understand the consequence of their actions, and to continue having good relationships with their peers and the adults supporting them. Trauma Trauma is when someone has experienced something negative, stressful, or frightening which has affected them. Please email safeguarding@wcyp.org if you have any concerns.
- Our Purpose | About Us | Weston Church Youth Project
About Us This is the place to be to find out more about WCYP! Find out about: Our Purpose, Our Home, Our Team, Our Finances, and Our Story. Our Purpose Our Mission Our Mission is to equip the young people of Weston to enjoy life in all its fullness. Our Values Our values are to be a Coherent, Christian, Community. Here's what this means to us: Coherent : organised around the welfare of the whole young person. Christian : founded on the message and example of Jesus Christ. Community: dedicated to the collective and social good of Weston. Behaviour Here at WCYP, we understand that the majority of the behaviours children and young people present are trying to communicate something or potentially as a result of something which they have experienced, especially challenging behaviour. We wanted to share some of our research and thoughts for responding to behaviour challenges at WCYP, and to signpost some information and support which is available for you if you are struggling with the behaviour your children are presenting at home. Training We provide training for our team that addresses a variety of areas which impact how a child or young person may behave, communicate, and view the world around them, such as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) , Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), or Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties (SEMH) . This understanding informs how we address and respond to behaviour at our groups and activities, as we think it is important to consider the reasons for the challenging behaviours which are being presented. Responding We encourage our team to think of three steps when responding to an incident: Danger, Think, Respond. We find the acronym ‘PACE’ really helpful for learning how to support children and young people: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy . This method was introduced by psychologist Dan Hughes . We know that supporting children and young people can be really difficult sometimes, especially if they are presenting with challenging behaviours. We would love to support you where we can, but we would also like to recommend other agencies and partners of WCYP who may be able to support you.
