About Us This is the place to be to find out more about WCYP! Find out about: Our Purpose, Our Home, Our Team, Our Finances , and Our Story. Our story 1992 THE BEGINNING A long time ago, the team at Holy Trinity Weston decided to begin Weston Church Youth Project to meet the support of the children and youth of Weston. 1999 GAINING MOMENTUM By 1999, WCYP had 4 team members, including a Project Manager, two youth workers and a Project Trainee, and recieved regular funding from over 8 organisations. 2001 ROCK SOLID By the year 2001, our WCYP records talk about an 'Open Youth Club' called Rock Solid! It may have the same name as our current Wednesday group for 7-11 year olds at the Venny, but it has changed a lot over the years! 2015 THE VENNY In 2015 Weston Church Youth Project starting running sessions at the Venny like Rocksolid our former open access groups and Resilient Kids our mental health wellbeing group. 2017 C.I.O. In June 2017, Weston Church Youth Project officially became a charitable incorporated organisation (C.I.O.) and was granted charitable status. 2020 THE PANDEMIC As you know, March 2020 was the beginning of the first UK lockdown as a result of 'rona (the Coronavirus). Just like the rest of the UK, WCYP had to adjust to lockdown life, from social distancing and mask-wearing through to home fitness and video calls. Sadly, the pandemic was not a positive experience for a lot of people, including children and young people, having a significantly negative impact on social, emotional, physical, and mental health, as well as behaviour and education. This impact was disproportionately higher amongst those in poverty, such as in our local community. We witnessed this negative impact in Weston, and did what we could to continue supporting our community during this time. 2022 WCYP'S 30TH BIRTHDAY How has the time gone that quickly? In August 2022, we were joined by supporters of WCYP and various members of the community at the Venny for a fun community day celebrating WCYP's 30th birthday! 2023 LOVE WESTON As time goes on, more and more churches, charities and organisations are wanting to make a difference in our community. It's not an official term, but we introduced the name 'Love Weston' for community partnership events in the area. Check out our Halloween Light Trail or our Easter Trail. 2024 LAUNCH OF HOPE CITY In 2024, a new church began in Weston - Hope City Church, Southampton - which was launched as a partnership between WCYP, Holy Trinity Weston, and Kings Community Church. They are based at the Hope Centre and meet at Weston Shore Infants School . While a multi-generational community, this church is particularly focused on supporting people aged 19-29, as a continuation of our work supporting 7-18-year-olds at WCYP. They are now independent from WCYP but still work in partnership with us. They meet every Sunday 10:45am at Weston Shore Infant School. THE FUTURE What's next for WCYP? We continue to dream big dreams and have faith for the continued work of WCYP and what we could get up to in the future. In order for us to keep serving our community and helping "the young people of Weston to live life to the full", we'd love you to get involved, whether that's by helping, giving, or praying.

- Our Purpose | About Us | Weston Church Youth Project
About Us This is the place to be to find out more about WCYP! Find out about: Our Purpose, Our Home, Our Team, Our Finances, and Our Story. Our Purpose Our Mission Our Mission is to equip the young people of Weston to enjoy life in all its fullness. Our Values Our values are to be a Coherent, Christian, Community. Here's what this means to us: Coherent : organised around the welfare of the whole young person. Christian : founded on the message and example of Jesus Christ. Community: dedicated to the collective and social good of Weston. Behaviour Here at WCYP, we understand that the majority of the behaviours children and young people present are trying to communicate something or potentially as a result of something which they have experienced, especially challenging behaviour. We wanted to share some of our research and thoughts for responding to behaviour challenges at WCYP, and to signpost some information and support which is available for you if you are struggling with the behaviour your children are presenting at home. Training We provide training for our team that addresses a variety of areas which impact how a child or young person may behave, communicate, and view the world around them, such as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) , Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), or Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties (SEMH) . This understanding informs how we address and respond to behaviour at our groups and activities, as we think it is important to consider the reasons for the challenging behaviours which are being presented. Responding We encourage our team to think of three steps when responding to an incident: Danger, Think, Respond. We find the acronym ‘PACE’ really helpful for learning how to support children and young people: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy . This method was introduced by psychologist Dan Hughes . We know that supporting children and young people can be really difficult sometimes, especially if they are presenting with challenging behaviours. We would love to support you where we can, but we would also like to recommend other agencies and partners of WCYP who may be able to support you.

To keep up to date with any changes to our normal groups or any special events or trips, get in touch and follow us on socials! Bouldergang Mondays 3:15-5pm at Holy Trinity Weston Bouldergang is our faith afterschool club for 7-11 year olds (school years 3-6) that runs Mondays 3:15-5pm at Holy Trinity Weston. We have 45 minutes of free time with a tuck shop, free toast and milkshakes, board games, Lego, craft and sometimes other activities too. We then have an hour of group games, craft and learning from the bible together. It is 50p a session but free for the first time. Resilient Kids Tuesdays 3:45-5:15pm at the Venny Resilient Kids is a referral-based group for children. The group prioritises helping children to develop their confidence and resilience through a programme of activities and discussion topics. The small group environment is particularly focused on supporting children who may struggle with their emotions or behaviour, especially in bigger groups, helping them to learn social skills and to consider others. This group takes the form of a termly programme, providing a certificate for children upon completion of the course. Messy Church Sundays 4-5:30pm at Holy Trinity Weston Messy Church is a monthly interactive family service based at Holy Trinity Weston. We do crafts at the start, then come together for a short fun service learning about the bible through games, songs, comedic sketches and more. We then share a meal together. Its completely free and children need to be accompanied by an adult. It runs on the first Sunday of the month and starts at 4pm. TRINITY KIDS Sundays 10-11:30am at Holy Trinity Weston Trinity Kids is Holy Trinity Weston 's children's groups that run druing the 10am Sunday morning service. Whilst it is techinically a Holy Trinity group, we know you'll enjoy it (and it is still led by WCYP's Youth Pastor). The kids are split into two groups based on age where they learn about the Jesus and the bible with games, craft and snacks. Drawing & Talking Various Weston Primary Schools Our Children's and Families Coordinator, Debbie, runs Drawing and Talking sessions for pupils at Weston Park Primary School. Drawing and Talking is a therapeutic intervention which can be used with children, young people and adults. The enjoyable and accessible sessions enable children to begin to understand and express their emotions more fully, helping them to be more at peace within themselves and the world around them. There are different approaches to suit the individual including 1:1, sand and group work. PRIMARY SCHOOLs' work Various Our team also support the local primary schools through mentoring, assemblies (faith and non-faith), and group work. FAMILY work Various We are passionate about making a difference in Weston, and that includes supporting parents, carers and family members; not just their children and young people. We have supported local families in different ways in the past, such as facilitating meetings, running family trips and organising community events. One of the most significant ways that we have done this recently is through working with local churches and organisations as 'Love Weston' to run community events, such as at Easter and Halloween. TRIPS Various We run a variety of amazing trips throughout the year for children and families, taking a group for fun trips to places like Playzone, Ninja Warrior, and Marwell. Trips provide children with new and exciting opportunities for activities, to develop friendships, and to learn new skills. Come along to our groups and follow our social media pages to look out for our next trip! Residentials Various In the past, we have run a variety of amazing residentials for children to exciting places like YMCA Fairthorne Manor. Residentials provide children with new and exciting opportunities for activities, as well as to develop friendships, learn new skills, and develop their independence. We hope to be able to run more Primary residentials in the future!

- Our Home | About Us | Weston Church Youth Project
About Us This is the place to be to find out more about WCYP! Find out about: Our Purpose, Our Home, Our Team, Our Finances, and Our Story. Our Home WELCOME TO WESTON Our Community Weston is a small suburb in the ward of Woolston in the south-east of Southampton, right on the edge of Southampton Water. You might recognise Weston shore from a 2024 episode of Silent Witness or recognise the big tower blocks from the 2015 film Containment or even Big Brother Celebrity Hijack , way back in 2008. Weston is surround by nature with Southampton's only beach, and beautiful woodland by Weston adventure playground. However, being close to the city centre means it is still in the radius of popular takeaway deliveries, and most importantly close to Southampton Football Club , the unofficial religion of Weston! Community is important in Weston, and you can’t walk far without bumping into someone you know, with Halloween being one of the biggest events in Weston’s social calendar. Sadly, there are quite a few difficulties faced by our community, from high levels of deprivation and poverty to high rates of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) amongst local children and young people. The statistics show that 1 in 3 children in Weston are living in low income households. People living in a low income area are also more likely to have their mental health impacted, with people living in deprived areas almost twice as likely to deal with depression than more affluent areas, and Weston is no exception – it’s one of the top three areas in Southampton for the prevalence of depression in people aged 15 and over. Children in Southampton are also more likely to be identified as having social, emotional or mental health needs than children in the rest of England. On top of all this, 35.7% of households with dependent children are single parent households and of those, 47% of the single parents aren’t in employment. This might provide a bit of a negative picture, but it is worth acknowledging the challenges so that we can identify what can be done to help. We exist to “equip the young people of Weston to enjoy life in all its fullness,” through a variety of groups, activities, trips and residentials, categorised into ‘FUN’ , ‘SUPPORT’ and ‘FAITH’ . We are encouraged to be making a valuable difference in this community, engaging a total of 400 individual children and young people in 2023, providing over 200 sessions of children’s and youth work in 2023, and achieving positive feedback and outcomes such as 80% of children and young people participating in 'FUN' groups saying that their self-esteem and aspirations had improved, and 94% saying that they had tried something new. Our Locations We LOVE WESTON and know you will too! We host the majority of our regular groups and activities in the below venues, so here's a link of how to find them! Also, we massively recommend booking one of them for your next birthday party, celebration, or event! THE VENNY The Venny Weston Adventure Playground, known by locals as ‘the Venny’, is a brilliant hideaway building nestled at the bottom of Canberra Towers and next to West Woods. Half play area and half youth centre, the Venny has existed for decades, with the building section built in 2005, and the playground section having been around since the 1970's, providing a space for many children, young people and families to build fond memories. WCYP have hosted groups and activities at the Venny for many years, in addition to having our office based there. Find out about the Venny! Holy Trinity Weston The local Anglican church, Holy Trinity, works closely with WCYP, partnering with us for our ‘Faith’ work , and supporting us with volunteers and finances. Back in 1992 , Holy Trinity Church was responsible for setting up WCYP and, even though we exist as a separate charity now, we continue to work closely together. Find out about Holy Trinity Weston! HOLY TRINITY WESTON The Hope Centre The Hope Centre is home to Hope City church , a new church plant on the estate which represents a partnership between Holy Trinity Weston , Kings Community Church , and WCYP. WCYP have recently started running some of our groups and activities at the Hope Centre. Find out about the Hope Centre! THE HOPE CENTRE

This was originally divided into 'Fun', 'Achieve', 'Engage' and 'Faith', however 'Engage' and 'Achieve' were superseded by 'Support' in 2024. You can find more information on these funding categories below, with reference to some of the key groups and activities which come under each stream. In order to have a more detailed view of the various groups and activities which we run, head to the sections for Kids and Families or Young People respectively. WCYP's 'Engage' project focused on... WCYP'S 'Achieve' project focused on... FUN This division of WCYP aims to support children and young people through open access youth groups, trips, and residentials. These groups and activities are focused on providing new experiences, improved self-esteem and confidence, positive role models, and raised aspirations. As the most attended category of work within WCYP, the ‘Fun’ activities are often the method for WCYP to reach more children, young people and families so that further support can subsequently be provided through the ‘Support’ category (such as a referral to a mental health support group, for example). SUPPORT This division of WCYP aims to support children and young people through a variety of groups and activities focusing on mental health and emotional development, including schools work. The key outcomes for the 'Support' category of work include increased confidence and emotional resilience, increased self-esteem, improved mental health, better relationships (with peers and families), and improved educational engagement and attainment. FAITH This division of WCYP aims to support children and young to explore the Christian faith in a fun and engaging way. These groups and activities are focused on sharing the Christian message (evangelism ) , providing Christian teaching, and other outcomes such as improved confidence and relationships, and having fun. The majority of WCYP's 'Faith' work is run in parternship with Holy Trinity , the local Anglican Parish church which originally started WCYP. WCYP has also worked in partnership with HTW and KCC to launch 'Hope City' as a means of reaching Weston's 19-29's demographic with the Christian message.
